Resident Caretaker Opportunities

Join Our Feminist Intentional Community at HOWL – Huntington, VT

Huntington Open Women's Land (HOWL) is seeking one or two residential caretakers/tenants to join our intentional feminist community in Huntington, VT, about 45 minutes from Burlington. HOWL is a mission-driven nonprofit which stewards 54 acres of land on Camel’s Hump, creating a space centered on women, trans people of all genders, and nonbinary people. In the past year and a half, HOWL has welcomed new leadership via a majority POC and trans/nonbinary Futures Committee dedicated to ensuring the land and community thrive for years to come.

About the Space

You’ll share a cozy house on beautiful, rugged land with your own private room. The property is located at the end of a dirt road, so a reliable vehicle is essential, especially during Vermont winters. While we’re in a rural area and stores are not open late, basic amenities are within reach—Richmond Market is 20 minutes away, and Beaudry’s Store is 10 minutes away.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for women, trans, and nonbinary people who are a good fit for our community, to maintain alignment with the preferences of our current residents and the mission of our nonprofit. A good fit means people who:

  • …especially when living with others. We value people who are able to navigate conflicts calmly and communicate effectively in a shared living space. Being adaptable and community-oriented is important to ensure harmony in our small, intentional household.

  • As we’ve mentioned above, HOWL is located relatively remotely.

  • Many people involved in HOWL are also queer, bisexual, or lesbian, so we seek people comfortable with and committed to this community

  • Including maintaining common spaces, managing visitors, and contributing to HOWL's events and land stewardship.

  • Such as mowing, shoveling, wood stacking, light house maintenance, and event preparation. (We host a few activities a year. Some take place in the house.) You would have the opportunity to learn tractor skills, grow food on the land if desired, and participate in all aspects of managing the land and activities. Flexibility is key, and communication is appreciated if life gets in the way of a week's responsibilities.

  • Including managing campers through Hipcamp from May to October.

Rent and Responsibilities

Rent is $475 per month. All utilities are included. In addition to the 5 hours per week of caretaking, one resident is asked to attend the first 20 minutes of each monthly Collective meeting to report on any house or grounds maintenance issues. HOWL’s Collective (board) serves as the landlord and is a resource for caretakers (one Collective member serves as point of contact for maintenance needs).

If you're interested in living in a feminist, rural, intersectional community and contributing to our mission, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us to start the process.
